A question for Atheists about the Meaning of Life?

Some people believe that our life has no meaning and that the only "meaning" of life is to create our own purpose. But if that is so, then how did Gandhi's purpose have any greater meaning than Hitlers? How do you determine who was the greater man if there is ultimately not real meaning to life?
