By looking at a chemical formula, how can you tell if its an ionic or covalent bond?

i know covalent means sharing and ionic means combining...but if you saw something like NaF how do you know if is a result of a covalent or ionic bond? PLEASEE HELPP MEEEE!!!!! my teacher doesn't teach us very well at all and i have a 15 point homework ignment due tomorrow
